MYTH 1
HIRING A RECRUITING SERVICE IS THE MOST EFFICTIVE WAY TO GET A FININCIAL AID PACKAGE OR SCHOLORSHIP.

REALITY
College coaches usually don’t buy into recruiting services.  There are too many that just take your money, whether you’re qualified or not.  College coaches can’t waste their valuable time looking at students that don’t even qualify academically.  If you do use a service make sure they have a money back guarantee.

MYTH 2
THE BEST WAY TO GET DISCOVERED IS TO PLAY ON TRAVELING CLUB TEAMS AND ATTEND COLLEGE CAMPS

REALITY
Many Pro and College scouts do attend these activities to look at athletes already on their list.  Your high school coach does care about you and your chances to play at the next level.  Ask their advice to see if they recommend you participating in these events

MYTH 3
IF YOU GET AN OFFER YOU HAVE TO MOVE QUICKLY

REALITY
The better your chances are to find the right financial package as well as the right college for you when you have more options offered.  This puts you in a position of strength when negotiating.

MYTH 4
IS IT BETTER TO BE A WALK-ON AT A BIG TIME SCHOOL WHERE YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN PLAY OR GOING TO A SMALLER SCHOOL WHERE YOU ARE SURE TO PLAY?

REALITY
If you love to play your sport you should want to be playing and not sitting the bench.  Your most important deciding factor is finding the ideal school for your attributes.  Not because of a big name.
I know of a running back that was offered to play at Syracuse University.  He knew he would not play much, so he took an offer from a top DIII college, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He was a 5-year starter and set schools records in punt returns and rushing, while getting his masters degree in business.

MYTH 5
IF YOU GET A CALL FROM A COLLEGE COACH YOU ARE SURE TO GET A COLLEGE SCHOLORSHIP.

REALITY
Just because you get a call from a college coach doesn’t mean you’re his main recruit for that position.  If you get a call you need to ask him on that first call if he is going to visit you at home and are you offering an official paid visit.  How he answers that question will give you his real level of interest in you.

MYTH 6
IT IS PROBABLY TOO LATE TO START THE RECRUITING PROCESS WHEN YOU’RE A SENIOR.

REALITY
Other than the big time programs a vast portion of athletic recruiting takes place during your senior year.  Over 80% of colleges make their final recruiting decision after January 1st of their senior year

MYTH 7
PARENT KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR CHILD AND THEIR CHANCES OF GETTING A SCHOLORSHIP, THEREFORE THEY MUST MAKE SURE THE COACH IS DOING EVERYTHING TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES.

REALITY
A child want his high school years to be fun.  Coaches can’t stand parents that are always meddling and putting pressure on their kids and coaches.

Myth 8
STUDENT – ATHLETS SHOULD ONLY CONSIDER GOING TO BIG NAME UNIVERSITIES

REALITY
Don’t get so caught up in going to a huge well-known college.  According to the US News and World Report over 50% of the top tier schools don’t even have a Division IA football programs. This is all about going somewhere where they care about your future, believe in you, while getting a great education.

Myth 9
MY HIGH SCHOOL COACH WILL BE RESPONCIBLE FOR MY COLLEGE RECRUITING.
REALITY High School coaches are a tremendous resource for college recruiters, but they have a lot of athletes to worry about and it is your responsibility to do the work at marketing your talents and getting your RESUME’ (Player Profile) in front of college coaches.  The average high school coach has contacts with less than a 5% of the collegiate coaches across the US.

Myth 10
A DIVISION I SCHOLORSHIP IS THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY FOR A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT- ATHLETE TO GET A SCHOLORSHIP
REALITY Only 8% of high school student – athletes get a fully funded Division I scholarship.  There are hundreds of outstanding Division II and Division III and NAIA colleges in the US that will provide scholarships and money grants while providing an excellent education.
